Casa Pictata accommodation
Casa Pictata was finished being restored in April 2014. We booked it out for easter before it was finished in the winter and so had the smell of paint as people arrived as we finished a few days before 🙂 It is a large bright house with views out to the Gutâi Mountain. The ‘painted’ part of the house was done by a local artist who understands the styles from 100 years ago, and he says this is how they did it. Using simple designs and their fingers as paint brushes.
Twin Room
The twin room has two full size beds that have been painted in a different style to the living room. There are two large cupboards and a wardrobe for hanging cloths in.
The bed in the living room
There is a full size bed in the living room. So if there are three adults staying in the house there person who sleeps here gets there own room and the other two share the room upstairs. It also doubles as sofa during the day.
The living/dinning room
In all traditional houses in Maramures, everything was done in one room, to save on heat. Casa Pictata is no different. This room doubles as the living room and dinning room allowing for 4/5 people to easily sit around the table for dinner to to play cards and relax.
The kitchen/dinner
The house caters for 3/4 people, but you can sit more. There is a electric oven and four gas hobs allowing you to cook a romantic dinner for two by candlelight or a feast for more. The kitchen is well stocked, with spices, pasta and rice. in fact everything you need to cook a meal minus the veg and any meat you may want. These can be bought locally from the villagers or the shops in Breb or Ocnar Sugatag where the local market is every Thursday. The kitchen was originally a room for just keeping firewood with a dirt floor and no ceiling. Penny designed the layout using old oak beams from another house and persuaded the local carpenter to keep the original finish to the wood when building the fitted units. It’s a cosy room with views out over the garden and stream next to the land. The kitchen is just for you to use, so if you rent Casa Mica, you have the house to yourselves! The dining table seats six people and we have cutlery, plates, bowels etc also for six.
The bath room
Flush toilet ( no tradition here) and shower with hot water all day long. Wash basin and space for towels that we provide and your own toiletries. The ceiling is a bit low in the toilet. The shower is full size but the toilet is in the eaves of the house, so if your a giant, maybe book a different house 🙂
